Signing Funny is a feel good documentary short highlighting the seven year brew of Laugh-A-Latte, the most diverse stand-up comedy showcase in the Los Angeles area. With Hot Java Coffeehouse as its home in Long Beach, it is the only venue around with a sign language interpreter (Tom “Hot Fingers” O’Malley) as part of the show. Adding to the diversity of the comics and the audience are our Deaf regulars who have the opportunity to enjoy stand-up comedy like never before. Rumor has it the hearing come to see Hot Fingers and the Deaf come to see Carlease.
Due to the explosion of her acting career, it was a natural transition for Carlease to turn the live show over to Tom.
Now we hear that he is producing, hosting and interpreting all at the same time!!
Carlease Burke, a comic and actress seen on TV shows such as Switched At Birth, Shameless, Castle, Touch, and The Mindy Project. Tom "Hot Fingers" O'Malley, is our resident sign language interpreter and audience favorite. He and Carlease take the term "comedy team" to a whole new level. They have been working together for several years on various stages including Hot Java, the Long Beach Laugh Factory and for Carlease's solo show Fifty, It Doesn't Look This Good On Everybody. Mr. O'Malley has interpreted for musical acts such Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, The Village People and Sheena Easton to name a few.
